In yesterday’s ODI World Cup game between the Netherlands and South Africa, the Netherlands came out on top.

This has given the Dutch a glimmer of hope and they feel that they can notch up some more wins and cause upsets as well.

Meanwhile, skipper Scott Edwards has expressed his delight in winning the first game of the tournament and feels that they played really well against the Proteas.

Reflecting on the win, Edwards says,

We came into this tournament with high expectations, we feel like we’re playing good cricket, we’ve got a lot of good players… but in saying that, we know that there are nine other very good sides here. So, yeah, very excited to get our first win out of the way after three games and hopefully a few more to come.

Adding further, he says,

That’s a massive boost for us. In both the first two games, we were in decent positions, but we sort of fell away through the middle. Nice that we could put a few partnerships together at the end [against South Africa] and get ourselves to total which we thought could be competitive.

Netherlands cause great upset for South Africa; stitch together some great partnerships

Talking about the game, South Africa won the toss and decided to put the Dutch in to bat first.

Once again, it looked like the Netherlands lost their plot halfway in the game as they came down to 82/5.

During this period, in came 27-year-old Scott Edwards who played the best inning of his international career.

Moreover, the game was a 43-over per side one because of persistent rains for two hours at Dharamsala.

Meanwhile, Edwards batted in prolific fashion and got two partnerships with Roelof van der Merwe and then with Aryan Dutt.

This took the Netherlands’ score to 245/8 in their 43 overs and asked the Proteas to chase down 246.

However, the task became uphill for South Africa as they lost wickets at regular intervals and the Dutch made quick inroads.

In the end, they couldn’t reach the target as they collapsed very badly and lost the game by 38 runs.

On the other hand, Edwards for his knock of 78 from 69 balls was awarded the Player of the Match as well.
