Jadeja not playing in IND vs SA 1st Test, Sanjay Manjrekar comments

Why is Ravindra Jadeja not playing in IND vs SA 1st Test? Sanjay Manjrekar comments on the all-rounder missing the match.

The India vs South Africa two-match Test series began on December 26 in Centurion. However, the much-anticipated match got delayed due to rain. The outfield was found to be soggy due to overnight showers. As a result, a delay of around thirty minutes was imposed on the match. Therefore, the players had to wait on the sidelines while the ground crew worked on the outfield. The toss was eventually held between Rohit Sharma and Temba Bavuma. South African skipper Temba Bavuma won the toss and chose to bowl first.

After Rohit Sharma revealed the playing 11 against South Africa in the first Test, it was unfortunate to know that Jadeja was not playing. According to the reports, the spin all-rounder complained of upper back cramps early in the morning. Moreover, after following a thorough assessment, the management decided he was not fit for selection. It is a big blow-up for India, as Jadeja has been terrific for the team. In addition, he has been a vital player for the Men in Blue in all formats.

R Ashwin replaced Jadeja in the playing 11. He is a seasoned off-spinner and experienced test player. Though he may not be able to fully replace Jadeja’s abilities, he can make a significant contribution. Fans would be expecting Ashwin to step up and use his skills to help India in the 1st Test against South Africa.

After the Day 1 scores, Sanjay Manjrekar while speaking to ESPNcricinfo said that,

“India’s batting certainly got affected by Jadeja’s absence because his overseas batting in Tests has been sensational. I don’t think it will matter much with the ball as things could get interesting if the ball doesn’t turn. Then you will need someone who deceives in the air and Ashwin is a better option. But if they want to score some quick runs, then they will not have something that Jadeja provides”
