Following World Cup snub, Sanju Samson discloses a little-known conversation with Rohit Sharma.

Rohit Sharma

Power hitter Sanju Samson, who could play at the highest level for India in white-ball cricket, has made very few appearances for the Men in Blue despite having unbounded ability. Samson was signed on to serve as the Asia Cup 2023 reserve batter. The veteran opener Rohit Sharma of Team India ignored the Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain because of the return of middle-order threat Shreyas Iyer and wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul to the lineup.

India achieved a perfect ten under Rohit’s guidance, and the World Cup hosts advanced to the 50-over match’s final. However, India’s trophy drought in ICC events was prolonged after a loss to Australia under Pat Cummins. Samson will look to bolster his selection case for the ICC World T20 next year in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) after failing to secure a spot in the Indian team for the 2023 World Cup.

‘You performed well in the IPL but…’: Rohit

In one of his recent interviews on the YouTube channel – I AM with Dhanya Varma, Samson recalled his lesser-known conversation with India skipper Rohit during the IPL season. “Rohit Sharma was the first or second person who came to me and talked. He told me, ‘Hey Sanju, wassup. You performed well in the IPL but hit too many sixes against the Mumbai Indians. You bat really well.’ I had great support from him,” Samson said.

Samson ‘The unluckiest cricketer’

In 2015, Samson played his first international match at the Harare Sports Club against Zimbabwe. Samson has only appeared in 13 One Day Internationals (ODIs) and 24 Twenty20 Internationals for the defending world champions of India since making his debut. Ninety percent of Samson’s life is focused on cricket, and the captain of RR doesn’t think he’s the unluckiest player in the Indian league. “That doesn’t really interest me. “Aiyyyo, Sanju, paavam!” The unluckiest cricket player ever! “What kind of foolishness is that?” is what comes to mind when I hear that. How come my luck is the poorest cricketer? Samson remarked, “Where I am now is more than I ever imagined being able to.”
