India Women’s A defeated England Women’s A side by just three runs in the opening Twenty20 match of their three-match series on Wednesday in Mumbai, thanks to a late, inspiring comeback.

India A come back to win thriller against England

With a victory target of 135 runs, England appeared to be in total control thanks to a spectacular 70-run partnership. Between vice-captain Hollie Armitage (52) and wicketkeeper-batter Seren Smale (31). But India rallied with a string of wickets to secure a victory by a narrow margin.

At the Wankhede Stadium, India pulled off an exciting victory after Kashvee Gautam (2/23) struck twice to dismiss Smale and Issy Wong (2) in the 18th over.

Shreyank Patil (2/26), with 13 needed off the last over, gave away five extras (wide) on the first ball. But India won by three runs in the end.

The Indian Women’s A team committed numerous errors in the field and failed to score enough runs.

With 52 off 41 balls (3x4s, 1x6s), Armitage, who top-scored in the match, took full advantage of a lifeline. When Prakashika Naik (1/28) spilled a regular catch at cover from Disha Kasat.

When India wicketkeeper Uma Chetry failed to collect the ball to break the stumps in the 14th over, thinking it would be a straight hit, there was another chance to break the stand.

The two English batsmen were running briskly between the wickets, applying constant pressure to the Indian fielders while launching heavy blows.

In the second over, Patil gave India A their first breakthrough by dismissing Grace Scrivens (7).

Player of the match Patil admitted India made errors in the field.

Brief scores: India Women’s A 134/7 in 20 overs (Vrinda Dinesh 22, Disha Kasat 25, Gnanananda Divya 22; Charlie Dean 2/19) beat England Women’s A 131/8 in 20 overs (Hollie Armitage 52, Seren Smale 31; Kashvee Gautam 2/23, Shreyanka Patil 2/26) by 3 runs.

It is a big platform for all of us. It happens, (but) how we come back is what matters,” Patil told the media after the match.
