Afghanistan sent a positive message to the world : Shahidi

The Afghan team’s performance in the competition was unbelievable. After defeating England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, three previous World Cup champions, they went from being the underdog to a strong contender. With just two World Cup victories under their belt prior to this competition, this was a truly amazing accomplishment.

Afghanistan fought valiantly in their last game on November 10, 2023, against South Africa. With a score of 97, Azmatullah Omarzai continued his unbeaten streak and helped Afghanistan reach 244. Nevertheless, South Africa secured their second position in the rankings by winning the game by a margin of five wickets. Afghanistan performed admirably and finished the tournament on a positive note, despite the loss.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Shahidi expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance and noted that they battled to the very end of every game. The Afghan captain complimented the batting unit and stated that they worked together to identify the weak areas.

As a captain, I’m quite happy with the performance we did. We fought till the last moment in each game. We had good games and a lot of learnings for us.”

Afghanistan gave a good message to the world with this tournament. We fought till the last moment against the big teams. The results didn’t go our way but we fought till the end. Even in that match against Australia, you saw we fought till the end. That Australia game was very shocking to us. Even the next day, it was shocking for me. But I’m proud of the team,” said Shahidi.
