Ashwin says he was “flabbergasted” by the bizarre mid-innings conversation during the 2023 World Cup.

Pat Cummins

Last Sunday, India lost the 2023 World Cup final to Australia by a devastating six wickets. Australia’s captain Pat Cummins invited India to bat first on a slow pitch at the storied Narendra Modi Stadium. This move would have a significant effect on the outcome of the match. As India was bowled out for 240 in fifty overs. Australia achieved a record-tying sixth World Cup title by chasing down the target with seven overs remaining as batting conditions improved under the lights. Australi has deceived me, personally says Ashwin.

As Australia’s history goes by, they say, we are gonna have a bat, mate after winning the toss in the big finals. I was praying to the lords that Australia should do that, because many people do not understand that the soil in Ahmedabad was like Orissa’s, as in, it played like how any soil taken from the eastern part of the country would play. If every pitch gets a bounce until the knee, this will get bounce only up to the shin. So, the bounce will be less but the soil won’t disintegrate because the clay does not release the moisture but holds it,” Ashwin explained on his official YouTube channel.

Ashwin reveals he was left ‘flabbergasted’

The off-spinner from India, Ashwin who had participated in the World Cup against Australia. Went on to say that he discussed the choice to bat first with chief selector George Bailey of the team and was left “flabbergasted.”

“I ran into George Bailey, the head selector. While trying to determine whether the pitch was breaking down in the middle innings“. I questioned, ‘Why didn’t you guys win the toss and bat first like you always do?’ He responded, “We have played IPL and bilateral series for a long time. And in our experience, the black soil gets better to bat on under lights, while the red soil disintegrates“. While black soil pitches are good turners in the afternoon, dew has less of an effect on red soil pitches. At night, however, the pitch becomes a patta wicket and plays as though it is made of concrete.

India will play again on Thursday, this time in a Twenty20 International series against Australia. With the exception of Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Prasidh Krishna. Every member of the team competing in the World Cup has been rested for the five-match series against Australia.
