2028 OLYMPICS CONSIDERING CRICKET AND FLAG FOOTBALL

The five sports nearing the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics include flag football, cricket, baseball-softball, lacrosse, and squash. Moreover, the final decision to include these sports in the Olympics will be made on Monday. The decision will be when the IOC meets with its members. The IOC President Thomas Bach said that, “These proposals have been accepted as a package,” said IOC president Thomas Bach, who chairs the 15-member board, hailing a showcase of “iconic American sports to the world while bringing at the same time international sports to the United States.”

Cricket is one of the sports that is expecting to raise broadcast revenue from India by at least $100 million. Moreover, it is a big-ticket item for the IOC and an opportunity to engage with fans. Thomas Bach at a news conference in Mumbai said that,

“For the Olympic movement, it is the opportunity to engage with a fan and athlete community to which so far we did have very little or even no access”

The T20 format, a shorter of cricket, will be in Los Angeles with six men’s and women’s teams participating. In addition, the host team, USA, is also included. However, some established cricket playing nations may not be able to participate, possibly including India.

Furthermore, Thomas Bach praised flag football for its increasing popularity world wide. Specially among girls and women. In addition, he believes that flag football could help avoid some of the injury issues that American football has been facing. On the other hand, lacrosse is known as the first nations sports of the United States.
