‘It was a strange innings’: Deep Dasgupta on Suryakumar Yadav’s innings

Surya Kumar Yadav

Former Indian wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta talked about Surya Kumar Yadav innings against Bangladesh. Indian team clinch their 8th Asia Cup title on 17th September. However, they suffered their only loss in the tournament against Bangladesh. Where the team fall short by 6 runs.

The main talking point from the game was Surya’s approach in his innings. He scored 26 runs in 34 balls against Bangladesh. Seeing his performance, pundits like Deep Dasgupta and Matthew Hayden came forward to talk about his showings in ODI cricket. Deep Dasgupta opined that it was very strange for him to witness Suryakumar Yadav attempting to play the same shot.

Deep Dasgupta said that,

It was very strange for me, because it seemed like that the only shot that he wanted to play was a sweep. I mean we have generally seen him being so good against the spinners, going over extra cover, mid off, he has other options. It was such a strange innings because all he wanted to do was sweep. I can understand that he is struggling. I can understand when you go out there, you connect a few and you feel confident. He was struggling to play that shot and he still went for it anyway,”

Matthew Hayden adds on to Deep Dasgupta ‘s comment

Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden also gave his take on Suryakumar Yadav’s performance in the last Super game of the Asia Cup 2023. Hayden opined that he understands that Suryakumar Yadav has not yet found what kind of play style he has to adopt in ODI cricket.

The 51-year old Hayden adds on,

I really understand the mindset. Because I had 7 years sitting in the nets not getting a game for Australia. You have these moments where you perform incredibly well for your states and in Suryakumar Yadav’s case – in First class cricket and in the IPL where his strike rate is 170+. When it comes to the ODI format, he has not quite found, or decoded what sort of player he is going to be,”
