On Sunday, October 8 at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium, India faced off against Australia in their opening match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Australia, who chose to bat first, was bowled out for 199 runs as the Indian spinners created a web of spin around their batting order. In response, the team lead by Rohit Sharma was in serious danger after reaching 2/3 in the first two overs. Shreyas Iyer, Rohit Sharma, and Ishan Kishan were all out for ducks.

India got a huge win against Australia

When Virat was out for 85 runs off of 116, Rahul and Hardik Pandya helped the team finish the game. Due to his undefeated 97 off 115 balls, the Karnataka hitter was named Player of the Match. Three of India’s first four batters were out in the first couple of overs of the run chase. Rahul joked that he was trying to catch his breath when he came to the wicket.

Quite honestly, not a lot of conversation. I was just trying to catch my breath as I just had a shower. I thought I would get a good half an hour – [or] an hour’s – break, put the feet up and just rest up. But I was out there in no time, so there was a bit of rush. I was just trying to get my breath back“. Rahul said while receiving the Player of the Match award at the post-match presentation ceremony.

Virat fails to get his 48th ODI century

The top Indian batsman continued to play a magnificent innings, scoring six fours in his innings of 85 (116). Virat and KL Rahul shared a stand of 165 runs, which enabled India bounce back from the early blows. India was able to chase down the mark of 200 in 41.2 overs and win the match by six wickets thanks to their outstanding stand. KL Rahul completed the game in grand fashion with a magnificent lofted cover drive that went for six to maintain his unblemished record at 97* (115).

India will face Afghanistan on Wednesday, October 11, at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi after defeating Australia. On the other hand, on October 12 in Lucknow, Australia will play South Africa.
