Women Big Bash League

West Indies captain Hayley Matthews will now captain Melbourne Renegades in WBBL 09. Hayley Matthews replaced Sophie Molineux as the skipper of the franchise.

The Melbourne Renegades appointed West Indies star all-rounder Hayley Matthews as the skipper of the franchise. The appointment of Matthews was the replacement of Australian Sophie Molineux. Sophie Molineux is suffering from a knee injury is the reason for her replacement. Moreover, on appointment of Hayley Matthews as the captain of Renegades General Manager, James Rosengarten said that,

While it is disappointing to not have Sophie for the WBBL|09 season, we’re lucky to have such an experienced leader in Hayley ready to step up. As the West Indian captain, Hayley was the obvious choice to take over in Sophie’s absence, and impressed us last season when she led the side at the back-end of WBBL|08”

Furthermore, Coach Simon Helmot, while talking about Matthews’ appointment as the Melbourne Renegades’ skipper shared his views. He was quoted by cricket.com.au saying,

“Hayley captained our team after Soph got injured last year and did a great job. The girls have great respect for her. To have her, with the experience of Jess Duffin, Harmanpreet Kaur and our vice-captain Georgia Wareham, it’s a real positive for us. Hayley is really invested in our club. she had a fantastic time last year and she wants to see us become more successful”

Hayley Matthews on her appointment as the skipper said,

“Honestly, the leadership of the team has definitely helped me to take responsibility of my game. That along with just learning and understanding my game a lot more from playing so much franchise and T20 cricket around the world. The two of those put together over the last 12 months have really helped not only with me scoring runs but scoring them consistently as well”
