AVESH KHAN IN SECOND TEST AGAINST SOUTH AFRICA
After an unimpressive stunt against South Africa in the first Test in Centurion, BCCI announced the replacement of Shami. On Friday, December 29, Avesh Khan was designated as Mohammed Shami’s replacement. The replacement took place after South Africa blasted India by an innings and 32 runs. Moreover, In the second innings at SuperSport Park in Centurion, India got out for 131. In addition, the board released a statement saying, “The Men’s committee has named Mr. Avesh Khan as a replacement for Mr. Mohd. Shami. Therefore, Avesh will participate in the second Test against South Africa starting from January 3 to January 7, 2024, in Cape Town. The BCCI released statement said that,
“The Men’s Selection Committee has named Mr Avesh Khan as a replacement for Mr Mohd. Shami for the second Test against South Africa to be played from 3rd-7th January 2024 in Cape Town.”
Mohammed Shami’s absence made the Indian bowling unit appear incredibly inefficient. India lost the match on the third day itself despite players like Prasidh Krishna and Shardul Thakur. Moreover, both the players were unable to put any pressure on the South African hitters. Shami did not receive the required clearance from the BCCI medical team. Hence, he was not allowed to participate in two Tests. To strengthen India’s speed assault in the series finale, Avesh has been introduced.
Before the Tests, Avesh Khan had a part in India’s successful campaign in the three-match ODI series against South Africa. The 27-year-old grabbed six wickets in the series. In addition, Avesh has so far taken 149 wickets in 38 first-class games.
