Abrar Ahmed in contention for Pakistan World Cup squad


Pakistan’s mystery Spinner Abrar Ahmed is reportedly a strong contender in the squad for the forthcoming ODI Cricket World Cup 2023. All the teams has to submit their final 15-member before 28th September. The mega-event commences on 5th October in Ahmedabad.

Abrar Ahmed who made his test debut against England earlier this year emerges as a wildcard in the Pakistan squad. After Pakistan’s lack-luster performance in Asia Cup 2023, their spin bowling department was under scrutiny. Pakistan’s spin-bowling attack led by Shadab Khan wasn’t able to get wickets throughout the tournament. Specifically, vice-captain Shadab himself had an average tournament.

According to Cricket Pakistan, a meeting took place between the Pakistan captain, Babar Azam, and the national selection committee on Sunday, September 17. Discussion happened to have a conclusive shape to the World Cup squad. The team’s leadership, along with the selection committee, has reached a consensus to keep changes to a minimum.

The selection committee have agreed to make a few changes to the roster. However, World Cup squad announcement will take place in few days, since the deadline date is around the corner.

Delay in Pakistan World Cup due to Naseem Shah injury report

Fitness report of many players awaited. Specifically, Naseem Shah’s fitness reports are awaited. The young pacer sustained a shoulder injury in Asia Cup. Initial reports claimed that the pacer couold be out of action for almost 6 months, ruling him out of the World Cup squad. Considering the pacer’s fitness, Zaman Khan, Shahnawaz Dahani, Hasan Ali, and Arshad Iqbal are likely to get a spot in the team.

Notably, Pakistan will commence their campaign against Netherlands on 6th October in Hyderabad. However, they will face their arch-rivals India on 14th October in Ahmedabad.
